Wellington Park Sensory Garden Story Board

Wellington Park Sensory Garden Story Board

Wellington Park Sensory Garden in Lexington, KY
Sculptures designed by Amanda Matthews

The artistic sculptures of native flora, fauna, and fungi will transform the entire space into a landscape of local environmental biology, and should enhance and complement the various plants and beautiful hardscape of the park. As such, these monumental, interactive sculptures are represented as flowers, ferns, mushrooms, a spider, a salamander, and a dragonfly. Secondary sculptures include snail fences, log benches, and naturally fed waterways.

Each design is intended to be interactive and stimulate one or more senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. The vignettes and sculptures are also designed to create a walking ecology storybook, along with signage including drawings and descriptions of each sculpture explaining its relationship to the local environment and how it is an indicator of a healthy habitat.

Katsina, Life Size, Lexington Women's Recognition Garden

Katsina, Life Size, Lexington Women's Recognition Garden

Sculptor: Amanda Matthews
Katsina Sacred Dancer Dryad - 6' 3", installed in Lexington, KY, Wellington Park, Women's Recognition Garden.

Katsina is the name for wooden doll, carved by the Hopi Indians, and given to girls beginning in infancy and on dance day ceremonies to help them learn about their responsibilities as women in the community. In the Hopi tradition, Katsina means “messenger between humans and the spirit world”.

Katsina beckons the power and beauty of nature in female form, looks to the sky for her inspiration, and needs no intermediary to express her wisdom, intellect, grace, and gifts.

Katsina is the Sacred Dancer.

She hears and understands the music of the Universe and dances in rhythm with the elements, while moving throughout time and existence. She moves with reason and enlightenment. She dances to the songs of all ancient religions while knowing that she and the stars and the trees are all sculpted from the same source and contain the same life.
